Plica Excision

Plica Excision

Plica is a fold of synovial membrane found within the knee joint. When plica becomes inflamed or irritated the condition is called plica syndrome or symptomatic plica.

Diagnosis of plica syndrome is done by performing a through physical examination and with the help of an arthroscopy (surgical procedure use to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint).

Treatment includes resting the knees and taking anti-inflammatory medications. If these measures do not work then surgery is often recommended to remove the plica. The procedure involves inserting an arthroscope, or a small camera and instruments into the knee to remove the inflamed tissue.
